Abbey Walls
Evesham
The Evesham Abbey site, together with parts of Abbey Park, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with Grade I and Grade II listed wall structures within the town's conservation area. It was on Historic England's heritage at risk register for many years but has been rescued by the £1.3m Evesham Abbey conservation project.
Historic England, who oversaw the scheme, described the 572metre long wall repairs as “an exemplar project.” The conserved walls were cleared of external and internal vegetation, sensitively re-pointed in an analysed and matched lime mortar, and then finished with soft plant-capping with low root depth plants to build a protective cap but not push out the mortar and stone.
Part of the scheme required community involvement so local schools were invited to bring classes to the site and encouraged to try their hand at lime mortar pointing. Our stone masons enjoyed sharing their skills with the children who now see their handy work on their local historic landmark; and consequently, feel more of a part of their local built environment.
D A Cook is a business that strongly believe in nurturing the next generation of craft skill. One of their second year carpentry apprentices’ hung brand new purpose-made oak doors on the walls that date back over 1000 years, which is something that not every apprentice can boast.
